BAU 2027: designing a trade show booth for the international construction market
From 11 to 15 January 2027, BAU returns to Munich as the world's leading trade fair for architecture, materials and building systems.
A biennial event that brings together the entire international community of design and construction: architects, planners, investors, industry, distribution and building companies. For companies producing materials, doors and windows, systems and components for the building sector, BAU is the main gateway to foreign markets.
Why BAU is different from other trade fairs
The audience is highly international and highly qualified: not only buyers, but planners and decision makers who assess products as part of long-term technical choices. Alongside them, manufacturers of building materials and systems, companies working in doors, windows and sliding systems, firms active in facades and surfaces, suppliers of energy efficiency solutions.
This changes the way a stand has to be conceived. Displaying is not enough: you need a space that allows you to explain a building system, to show a product as it actually works, and to support detailed technical conversations.
Stands for the building sector: what works at BAU
- Visibility within the hall. The spaces are vast and the stands of international competitors are substantial: vertical elements and illuminated signs set high up are often the only way to be spotted from a distance.
- The product in use. Doors, windows, sliding and opening systems: visitors want to touch, open, try. The product has to be shown in working conditions, not as a catalogue item.
- Opening onto the aisles. A closed perimeter works against you. Alternating solids and voids makes it possible to display outwards as well, and invites people in.
- Areas for technical conversation. Conversations here are long and often confidential: meeting spaces need to be set apart from the flow of visitors.
- Build quality of the finishes. At a fair devoted to materials and systems, the stand is itself a demonstration of how you build.
Terno Scorrevoli: case history

Effetre has already built stands for BAU: one example is the 2023 edition, for Terno Scorrevoli, a company that designs and manufactures sliding systems for doors and furniture. The stand opened onto the aisles through an alternation of solids and voids, and was made identifiable from every point in the hall by a five-metre-high central wall carrying an illuminated aluminium sign.
The challenges of a fair like BAU, addressed together: being found in a large hall and making a technical product understood in a matter of seconds.
Where to start
Companies that have never exhibited at BAU often find themselves having to decide everything at once: floor area, position, concept, budget. The right order starts instead from commercial objectives — contacts, new markets, a product launch — and moves from there to sizing the space, to the concept, to engineering the project.
Then come the variables of exhibiting abroad: technical regulations and approval times for stand designs, restrictions on heights and suspended structures, transport logistics, scheduling the on-site build. Steps that affect the overall timeline and are best handled with a partner who has dealt with them before.
